Groin Canyon
A unique canyon in France, near Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon and Annecy
We suggest you explore this incredible canyon when the flow is correct and the weather is stable. The adventure begins in the parking lot opposite the Valromey college. Once we’ve donned our wetsuits, harnesses and helmets, we’ll get back in our cars and take a shuttle bus that will take us directly to the start of the canyon du Groin .
Description of Canyon du Groin
The canyon starts with the 1st obstacle, which can be crossed either by an 8-9 metre jump or by abseiling.
This jump is the most technical in the canyon, as there is little space at the start, so if you hesitate, don’t overestimate yourself, take the abseiling option.
On arrival at the jump, a first siphon, often out of water, awaits you, under which you can easily pass.
Following this, a 30-metre swim brings you to a small overhang that we’ll climb over.
This type of siphon is very rare in canyoning, but it’s safe and great fun to do.
The next obstacle is an 8-meter jump that starts from a large boulder wedged between the walls of the canyon gorge. Of course, abseiling is also possible, as the jumps are never obligatory. To continue the canyon, you’ll have to pass the obligatory siphon. This obstacle is easy, two people can pass under the rock, and the immersion length is very short at just 20 cm.
Once past this siphon, a short swim takes you to the darkest part of the Groin canyon, a 5-metre jump into a black basin that gives access to a long reach of 100 metres of swimming and opens onto a beach with a skylight. The atmosphere is enchanting!
The canyon opens up, and sections of walking and passage under huge boulders alternate to allow us to reach an ancient canal that will take us to the last part of the canyon.
An abseiling slide or a 12-metre jump for the more athletic, with the instructor’s approval, propels us into a huge basin.
And finally, the last jump in the groin canyon offers a choice of heights from 3 to 6 metres.
